STARSHIP HISTORY
This USS Hawking was a an Intrepid Class Starship in service in the 24th Century.
The Intrepid Class was designed for scientific research in particular:
1. Provide autonomous capability for full execution of Federation defensive, cultural, scientific, and explorative policy in deep space or border territory.
2. Replace the Springfield class in certain frontline, light exploration duties.
3. Provide a platform for extended scientific survey and scouting missions.
4. Serve as a frontline support vehicle during emergencies and a platform for the extension of Federation diplomacy and policy.
5. Provide non-critical functions such as transport of personnel and cargo when necessary, extended aid, and short-range patrol.

The Hawking was launched in late 2370. She was due to undergo an extensive shakedown cruise in the gamma quadrant via the newly discovered Bajoran Wormhole, however the first engagement with the Dominion and the loss of the USS Odyssey led to a cancelation of the mission. Instead, her capabilities were tested in the Briar Patch. The advanced sensors made some incredible discoveries.
The mission was declared a success, and the Hawking was commissioned in early 2371, Her first mission was a sad one, as she was part of a task force that was sent to the Badlands to look for signs of what happened to two Federation Starships that went missing, the USS Voyager and Equinox. Believed destroyed by the plasma storms, the sensors didn’t find sufficient debris to suggest this. Although both vessels would be declared lost, they weren’t officially categorised as destroyed. The fate of both ships would come to be discovered some years later.
The Hawking would be assigned to Starbase 621, where she would be assigned a dual role in the base’s defence, and short term missions of exploration. The defence assignments would increase as the starship would be deployed in the Dominion War. Her main mission was to ferry supplies to the front lines, and the sick and injured from the front lines. Nevertheless she saw her fair share of combat, in 2375 her power relay was badly damaged in a battle with a Breen Battle group. Although the ship survived the damage proved to heavy, and she was taken back to spacedock.
The ship spent the rest of the war drydocked, as her systems were repaired. The crew were assigned elsewhere and the vessel was upgraded with new experimental systems that were more resilient against Breen weaponry, and a new suite of scientific instrumentation.
Better than ever, the Hawking returned to scientific and diplomatic operations.
